What is Gemprint?
GemprintTM is a proprietary patented technology provided by Gemprint
Corporation to the worlds diamond industry. Gemprinting is a non-invasive
method of identifying diamonds using a laser-based scanning device that interfaces with a
PC. Each cut diamond has a unique pattern that can be identified, even those that
appear to expert gemologists to be similar. The recorded pattern is then sent via
modem to Gemprints central database which keeps a secure international registry of
diamonds. A Gemprint certificate is issued to establish the identity and ownership
of the diamond. See How It Works for a further explanation.
Who uses Gemprint?
Gemprint is used by various
sectors of the diamond industry:
by
consumers:
- the registration of diamonds and
jewelry provides assurance that the purchased diamond can be identified in case of loss,
theft or stone-switching.
by cutters and jewelry manufacturers:
- supports inventory control in
that each stone can be individually
identified and tracked
- reduces losses in that the
Gemprinting process is a distinct deterrent
to in-house theft
- database storage for matching
and comparison and verification of stones
- the shipping of Gemprinted stock
complete with identifying certificates and a complete marketing package (Point of
Purchase)
by Internet auction and diamond sites:
- a number of Internet diamond
sites, including ourselves, use Gemprint Technology for inventory
control purposes.
by law enforcement agencies:
- law enforcement is offered a
tool for identification and recovery of stolen goods that has been effectively used in a
number of cases
by gemological labs:
- support to more standardized
appraisals, in that the Gemprint software incorporates menus for detailed appraisal
routines, and is compatible with internal and external appraisal
How accurate is Gemprint?
Gemprint has undergone rigorous
testing on thousands of diamonds - many of which appear identical to expert gemologists.
Each time Gemprint has been able to uniquely identify a cut and polished stone
without any external markings. Gemprint has been called the "DNA of
diamonds."
How long does it take to
Gemprint a diamond?
The Gemprinting process takes
less than 30 seconds for an individual diamond. To compare an individual diamond
against the entire database would take a few minutes.
Do I have to remove the
diamond from my ring or setting in order for it to be Gemprinted
No. The Gemprint Isi
scanner allows mounted stones to be Gemprinted.
How do I get my diamond Gemprinted?
We use Gemprint Technology as part of
our inventory control. All diamonds entering and leaving our brokerage
are run through the Gemprint machine for security purposes. If you
would like to register a diamond purchased from our company, simply request
the certificate from us. The cost to register is only $45.00 and well
worth the peace of mind. In addition, many insurance companies offer a
discount off of the premium for diamonds registered with Gemprint.
Are there other methods of
uniquely identifying diamonds?
The most common invasive methods
are various forms of laser inscription, which inscribe numbers or letters on the girdle of
the stone. The disadvantage to laser inscription is that there is
not an international registry that enables the diamond to be returned to the
rightful owner. Furthermore, inscriptions can be forged and polished
off of the diamond by thieves.
Which insurance companies
support Gemprint?
A number of insurance companies
provide discounts to those who insure their Gemprinted diamonds. Please ask your
local agent to inquire. For a complete listing see our Insurance
Company page.
Can Gemprint be used as
evidence in a court of law?
Yes. Gemprint has been
used as decisive evidence in several cases of recovery of stolen diamonds, such as
People vs. Maki of California et. al (San Diego, 1983)
and several more recent cases.
Can Gemprint help me recover
stolen diamonds?
Yes. Gemprint is routinely contacted
by local police departments as well as national and international law enforcement agencies
to assist in the identification of stolen diamonds and jewelry.
Ive lost my diamond and
it is Gemprinted. What do I do next?
Report the loss to your
insurance company or local police department along with the Gemprint certificate.
Gemprint will be pleased to co-operate if the stone is recovered and expert evidence is
needed.
Is my registration in the
Gemprint database secure?
All information in the Gemprint
database is strictly confidential and cannot be accessed by outsiders except for
comparisons performed for insurance companies and law enforcement agencies.
Can Gemprint help
protect against stone-switching?
Consumers have become concerned
about fraudulent practices by some in the jewelry industry as highlighted by recent
investigative journalists including Dateline NBC. If you have any concerns
about receiving back the identical diamond from a jeweler, Gemprint can provide assurance.
My diamond is only 0.30 carats
is this too small for Gemprinting?
No. All diamonds larger
than 0.05 carats can be Gemprinted.
Does Gemprint work with gems
other than diamonds?
Gemprint can work with certain
other gemstones that have a high degree of brilliance such as sapphires and topaz.
