When is an "Ideal Cut Diamond" Not?
When the proportions of the diamond do
not actually fall within the parameters set forth by the American Gem
Society Laboratory (AGSL) for the zero ideal cut proportions rating. Do
not assume that a diamond is "Ideal Cut" simply because it has a Total
Depth & Table Diameter that is within the range for ideal or because the
diamond has AGS Ideal or GIA Excellent polish and symmetry! Such
assumptions are foolish and can be quite costly. Insist on obtaining
the Crown Angle and Pavilion Angle measurements for any diamond that you
are considering, the information is easily determined by
Sarin DiaMension computerized proportions
analysis. Here is an example of a GIA Graded Diamond that is a
perfect example of a diamond that might be mistaken as having Ideal
Proportions:
This is a page
from our original site, please click here to
visit our current site!
The diamond has a Total Depth of 59.9% and a 56% Table Diameter and
Excellent Polish and Symmetry, yet the Crown Angle which is not disclosed
on a GIA Diamond Grading Report is only 32.4 degrees which results in an
overall proportions rating of AGS-2 Very Good as stated on the Sarin
proportions label which we affixed beneath the "Comments" section of the
report. Click on the thumbnail size image to view the full size
graphic. The second thumbnail image is the full page version of our computerized proportions
analysis for this diamond. The advantage to the full page report is
that it shows the high and low measurements that the average Crown or
Pavilion Angle measurements are based upon, the little Avery type mailing
label version only discloses the averages.
All of the Ideal Cut Diamonds listed for sale in our Private
Reserve of Nice Ice are "True" Ideal Cut Diamonds accompanied by
computerized proportions
analysis as proof of the proportions. Regardless of whether you are
purchasing a diamond on-line or from your local retailer, we recommend
obtaining the full version of the computerized proportions analysis before
completing the terms of purchase. If the jewelry store or diamond
dealer who you are working with does not have an OGI or Sarin machine on
the premises, we recommend having them send the diamond to an Independent
GIA Graduate Gemologist Appraiser who has a Sarin or OGI on the premises
for verification. Make determination of the proportions a "condition
of sale". Refer to our List of Diamond
Appraisers for a referral to an appraiser in your area.
